Abstract

The hard work of human rights activities across the globe has made a lot of impacts on the recognition of domestic violence. The Governments of various countries of the world have seen reasons why laws must be enacted to eradicate or limit domestic violence to the barest minimum. Both national and international instruments have crucial role to prevent violation of human rights and punish perpetrators. The number of countries which explicitly criminalized domestic violence in their primary legislations is increasing due to its negative effect in human societies or environment. The victims are majorly women and girl child. Example of this is the early girl child marriage which harms a girl child’s health, particularly her sexual and reproductive health, which most times lead to infertility and morbidity due to early pregnancies. Most women also suffer beating and other forms of violence from their husbands and such perpetrators are left unchallenged under the guise that it is a family issue that should be settled by the family which, more often than not are treated with triviality. Despite the numerous human rights laws put in place to curtail domestic violence. The problem still persists and the drive to eradicate this persistent anomaly, gave rise to this research. This research adopts the doctrinal research methodology and examines the environmental correlation between national and international human rights law in the context of domestic violence. To curtail the anomaly, the research recommends a reformation on enforcement mechanism to tackle all cases of domestic violence.
